Before launching into freelancing full-time in 1999, I worked for five years as a news editor for the Providence Journal daily metro newspaper, and spent two years as a book editor for the National Geographic Society. I’ve won a variety of journalism awards from the Rhode Island Press Association as well as recognition for my work from some national advocacy groups.
Driven to explore, I earned a private pilot certificate in Florida, lived in Hawaii for two years of graduate school, sailed as crew on tall ships, sailboats, and research vessels in the Atlantic and Caribbean, and flew hot-air balloons in California. I’ve traveled to Alaska and Costa Rica, and spent a summer backpacking in Europe. I now live in Rhode Island, on the edge of Narragansett Bay.
